Leopold Schmertzing is policy analyst in the Global Trends Unit within the European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS). Before that
he worked for the Austrian ministries of defense and foreign affairs, and for security related research projects in Austria and Germany. Leopold studied at Johns Hopkins SAIS and Vienna University, where he currently pursues a PhD in political science. The
Global Trends Unit mainstreams strategic foresight, analyses changes in the global economic, social, and geopolitical environment and contributes to the European Strategy and Policy Analysis System (ESPAS), a process of administrative cooperation to share
analysis of long-term trends facing the Union.
